Signs to look for

Do your wisdom teeth need removing?

Wisdom teeth usually appear between 17 and 25. Some cause no problems. Others become impacted, come through at an angle, or affect the teeth and gums around them.

Pain or pressure at the back of the jaw
Swollen, red or bleeding gums around a back tooth
Repeated infection around a partly erupted tooth
Difficulty opening your mouth or chewing
Food trapping or decay in a back tooth
A wisdom tooth that has come through at an angle
Not every wisdom tooth needs to be removed

Where a wisdom tooth is healthy and not causing problems, your dentist may recommend monitoring it rather than removing it. Whether removal is appropriate depends on your individual assessment.

Your appointment

What happens at your appointment

Every assessment is different because every patient is different. In general, it follows these steps.

01 Examination

Your dentist examines your teeth, gums and jaw, and asks about your symptoms and medical history.

02 X-rays

Carrara Dental takes bitewing and periapical X-rays in the clinic. If a panoramic X-ray or scan is needed, your dentist will arrange that for you.

03 Your options

Your dentist explains what the X-rays show and which options apply to you, including monitoring.

04 Written quote

If removal is recommended, you receive a written quote and treatment plan before anything is booked.

If removal is recommended

Simple extraction

Used when a wisdom tooth has fully come through and can be removed without opening the gum.

Surgical removal

Used when a tooth is impacted, partly covered by gum or bone, or has curved roots. The gum is opened and the tooth may be divided into sections. Stitches are often used.

Referral

Some cases are more appropriately managed by an oral and maxillofacial surgeon or in a hospital setting. Your dentist will explain why and arrange a referral.

Important information

Risks and recovery

Removing a wisdom tooth is a surgical procedure and carries risks, which are different for every patient. Your dentist will discuss the risks that apply to your situation before you decide whether to go ahead.

Possible risks and complications

  • Swelling, bruising and jaw stiffness, usually for several days
  • Bleeding from the socket, and pain as the anaesthetic wears off
  • Dry socket, where the blood clot is lost from the socket
  • Infection, which may require antibiotics
  • Difficulty opening your mouth fully for a period afterwards
  • Damage to nearby teeth, fillings or crowns
  • Numbness or altered sensation of the lip, chin, tongue or gums, usually temporary but in a small number of cases long lasting or permanent
  • Involvement of the sinus with upper wisdom teeth

What recovery usually looks like

  • Many people take one to three days away from work or study, and longer after surgical removal
  • Swelling often peaks around the second or third day
  • Soft foods for the first few days
  • Avoid smoking, alcohol, vigorous rinsing and drinking through a straw
  • Follow the written aftercare instructions you are given
  • Contact the clinic if you have heavy bleeding, increasing pain after the third day, a fever, or difficulty swallowing

This information is general and is not a substitute for advice from your dentist. Recovery and outcomes vary between patients. Suitability for any treatment is determined only after an individual clinical assessment by a registered dental practitioner.

Fees and health funds

How wisdom teeth are quoted

Wisdom teeth are quoted individually, because the fee depends on the tooth and the treatment it requires. You receive a written quote after your assessment, before any treatment is booked.

What affects your quote
  • How many teeth are involved
  • Whether each tooth is fully erupted or impacted
  • Whether removal is simple or surgical
  • Whether X-rays or a referral are needed
Health funds and HICAPS

Carrara Dental accepts major health funds and provides HICAPS on the spot claiming. The rebate you receive depends on your own policy, your level of cover, waiting periods and annual limits.

Our team can give you the relevant item numbers from your treatment plan so you can confirm your rebate with your fund before you decide.
